Franke : Franke is again honored to be selected by the Austin AIA for its annual Home Tour. The 2023 AIA Home Tour on October 28-29 will include the work of leading Architects practicing in the Austin Metro area. The Kinney Residence is a multi-phase project where we have been involved from conceptual site planning through design and construction services beginning with a remodel and restoration of the original street-front home, design and construction of an apartment over a workshop and carport, and culminating in design and construction of a new primary residence on the deep, narrow lot in the Zilker Park Neighborhood. The residence and apartment are designed to reflect one another through material selections, deep articulated roof planes and finely detailed masonry. Both relate to a central parking area which is often used as play court or outdoor theater for the owners’ family and friends. That important dialogue is quickly left behind upon entering the main residence where one finds an unexpected connection with a hidden creek and deeply carved ravine in the natural limestone banks beyond and below.
